On 21 March 2015 Radio Italia Uno Adelaide celebrated its first anniversary at the Festival Function Centre, Findon (South Australia). This was an important event for several reasons: first of all, the extraordinary success of the Radio station in only 12 months and the rapid growth in the number of listeners, the quality of programs and content. The event drew a large crowd of supporters and sympathisers, as well as some of the most assiduous listeners.
Among the guests, Annabel Digance MP, representing the Premier Jay Weatherill, accompanied by her husband Greg Digance; David Pisoni MP, representing the Opposition Leader Steven Marshall; Tony Zappia MP, Member of the Federal Parliament and the Hon. Grace Portolesi, Chair of the SA Multicultural and Ethnic Affairs Commission.
During the evening other important guests joined in the festivities, three ambassadors from the Middle East: Mr Khaled Al-Shaibani, Ambassador of Kuwait; Dr. HM Hassan El-Laithy, Ambassador of Egypt and Mr Nabil MA Al Saleh, Ambassador of Saudi Arabia. Their visit was greeted with great warmth and a long applause. The ambassadors, accompanied by local entrepreneur Charles Figallo, highlighted, in their brief greeting, the friendship with Italy and the affinity with the Mediterranean peoples. They all also recognised the value of Australian multiculturalism.
After the brief welcome by the Director of Programmes, Giovanni Di Malta and his colleague Cosimo Cutrì, Cav. Magistrate Ted Iuliano, President of the Radio, welcomed the guests and all those present, thanking them for their participation: “I welcome you all on behalf of the Committee, the programmers and conductors, to this great celebration of the first anniversary of Radio Italia Uno Adelaide. Special thanks to the supporters and sponsors of the evening, Managing Director of Scalzi Produce and his wife, and Mr Dino Musolino (who is also a board member of the Radio) and his wife for their financial support for tonight’s function.I also wish to acknowledge all our financial sponsors who helped us with funds to get us started. I wish to also extend a warm welcome to and acknowledge all those that have chosen to advertise their businesses and products with our Radio without whose continued financial support we would not be able to survived.
I am buoyed by the fact that we have proved our detractors and sceptics wrong in that we have survived beyond the 3 months that they had originally given us. They expected us to fall flat on our face, but far from that, not only have we proved our resilience but we have grown stronger and stronger through the number of listeners that follow us and the number of varied programs that we offer and I am proud to state that we are now the number one Italian speaking Radio station in the State.
This Radio is all about serving you, the community, as follows;
Firstly, we provide an important point of referral for the elderly members of our community, especially those that are in the twilight of their years and not so mobile or home bound by providing them with a service of contemporary information of interest to them and to keep them entertained with music of their liking, but most importantly to keep them company.Secondly, we promote our culture and our language which has, and continues to play, a vital part in the enrichment of the culture of this State.
Thirdly, we now also cater to the recent wave of migration of mainly well educated young people from Italy to this country. They have shown their willingness to contribute to this community by the number that have approached us to do programs on our radio, some of which have already successfully gone to air.
Fourthly, we provide live, direct and up to the minute news and sport coverage locally, nationally and internationally, enhanced recently by the acquisition of the young and energetic team of sport commentators in Paul Pellizzari, Rob Pepicelli, Paul Bombardieri and Luca Marveggio.
You can tune in to their Saturday Soccer show every Saturday from 11.00am to 1.00pm to hear their incisive analysis of local, national and international soccer news and of course their live coverage of local soccer games on Saturday afternoons.
This is what Radio Uno is all about, a radio ready to serve the whole of the community.
As you are aware we are a not for profit organisation staffed solely by volunteers and we depend entirely on the goodwill of you, the community, to provide us with funds to meet our ongoing expenses.
I wish to congratulate, and extend a heartfelt thanks, to all the editorial committee and all the programmers that have joined the team. The past year has been a demanding and challenging year to get all the programs to air. I never cease to be amazed at the amount time that our programmers have to invest to get their respective programs to air. They have no program director or assistants, they have to do all their own research prior to going to air and then conduct their programs on air. They also take turns to man the office and the phones. I have never seen more seriously dedicated people who have willingly and unselfishly provided their services to the community for many years and are willing to continue to do so into the future.
I also wish to thank all my fellow board members for their enormous contribution that they make to the success of this radio. The role requires considerable devotion of time, money and energy without any monetary reward or recompense. That we are able to work together in a co-operative, positive, constructive and friendly way is a credit to all and the main reason for our success.
Again, a heartfelt thanks to all our sponsors, donors and in particular those that continue to support us by advertising their businesses and products. Your financial support is the lifeline of our radio and I urge you all to continue with your support and participate in and celebrate with us in the success of this very important community service.
Last, but not least, thank you to our numerous listeners locally, nationally and even internationally, who obviously believe and have confidence in our ability to provide a product which is to their liking.We invite you all to participate by phoning or visiting our studios at 7/60 West Terrace, situated on the North Eastern corner of Weymouth Street and West Terrace, Adelaide. We welcome your comments, views and constructive criticisms. It will be your participation that will provide us with the encouragement to go on and we value your input and comments on the content of our programs. Your input is important to ensure that we continue to innovate and improve in the provision of programs that meet the needs of the community.So far the response of the community has been most encouraging and the turn out tonight is testament to the fact that we are on the right track.
Finally, I would like to sincerely thank tonight’s organisers, our social committee, the directors of the Festival Function Centre (the Di Chiera Family) and their staff, and all those who have donated the various prizes for our lottery.I wish you all a pleasant and enjoyful evening and urge you all to continue listening and supporting our programs. Viva Radio Italia Uno Adelaide!”
The speeches were followed by the cutting of the cake by the members of the Committee and the programmers present. Entertainment was provided by the musical group Mira e I Napoletani con Voi, the singer and impersonator Jerry and the young and talented DJ Giorgia.
